The prosecutor Maritza Camus Vega formalized Humberto Brewis Gutiérrez, 34, for the crime of abandoning the scene of the accident without providing help to the victim or notifying the competent authority, after carrying out a fatal accident on the Itata Highway, the Wednesday night.
The report from Carabineros de la Siat established that the deceased pedestrian, identified as Luis Hogas Leyton, 54 years old, exposed himself to risk by being on the road, at kilometer 6 of the aforementioned route.
The accused was arrested around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, after he voluntarily appeared at the Ñuble Highway Office. On Thursday the detention was extended due to pending proceedings, including the Siat report that exonerates him of responsibility for the accident.
The Police Investigation Section (SIP) and the Criminalistics Laboratory (Labocar) of the same institution also worked on the investigation of this accident.
The accused was left with a precautionary measure prohibiting him from leaving the country and the Guarantee Court of Chillán decreed a three-month deadline for the Prosecutor’s Office’s investigation.
