Triathlon: Ironman in Hawaii finally canceled due to the corona pandemic

The fact that there would be no Ironman in Hawaii in 2020 had already been decided in May. But nothing will come of the planned replacement date in February either.

The legendary Ironman on Hawaii will not take place in February 2021 because of the Corona crisis and has been finally canceled for the first time in its history. The organizers announced this on Tuesday (local time). The world championship in Triathlon Over 3.86 kilometers of swimming, 180.2 kilometers of cycling and 42.2 kilometers of running was originally scheduled for October 10, but was postponed to February in May due to the pandemic. In 2021, for the first time since 1982, there should be two world champions in one year.

“With a heavy heart” the event, which had initially been postponed, was canceled, the message said. The 70.3 World Championships over half the distance will not take place again until autumn 2021. “We were hopeful that we could welcome our athletes, their families and fans to these events, but the ongoing influence of the pandemic makes that impossible,” the organizers wrote. “It’s tough to make that decision in July, but that brings the necessary clarity for athletes, hosts and partners.”

At the Ironman in Hawaii there were only German winners recently

Since Sebastian Kienle’s victory in 2014, there have only been German winners in Hawaii. In 2015, 2016 and 2019 Jan Frodeno won, in between Patrick Lange took first place twice. The Ironman took place for the first time in 1978. Athletes who qualified for 2020 should be allowed to participate in the world championships in 2021 or 2022.
