Brittney Griner’s trial will begin this Friday, more than four months after the American basketball player was arrested in Russia for possession of cannabis. The athlete will be in custody until the trial is over, announced her lawyer Aleksandr Boikov, quoted by the New York Times.

Detained since February, the basketball player learned during a preliminary hearing this Monday that she will continue to do so for at least another six months, writes the Los Angeles Times. The Khimki city court, near Moscow, has set the date for the trial, which Brittney Griner’s lawyer believes will take up to two months to complete (depending on the court’s workload).

Aleksandr Boikov told international media that the three-time WNBA champion is doing well and has no complaints about the way she is being treated at the detention center where she is awaiting trial.

It’s hot in Moscow, so she feels it too, especially while being transported to court.”

Brittney Griner, US basketball star, may be ‘high-level hostage’ in Moscow

In May, the United States of America declared that Russia had “illegally” detained the 31-year-old athlete. Dmitry Peskov, said that it is not possible to “call hostage” the American player, who can now be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. Less than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in the US, acquittals can be overturned, says The Guardian newspaper.

Kremlin spokesperson says American basketball player is not “hostage”. “Violated Russian law”
