One person was killed and nine wounded in a shooting in Kansas at a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory on Wednesday, sparking panic among huge crowds of fans gathered to celebrate their team’s success.
According to data from the city fire service, three of the injured are in critical condition, five are in serious condition and one is not life-threatening, a spokesman for the service told AFP.
Kansas City police said two gunmen were arrested after the shooting at Union Station, just yards from where Chiefs players had addressed cheering fans moments earlier. “Anyone in the vicinity should leave the area as quickly as possible to facilitate the treatment of the shooting victims,” X local police said.
Fans fled the scene as police worked to clear one end of Union Station of the Chiefs’ victory parade. Earlier, hundreds of thousands of red-clad fans greeted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his teammates as they made their way along a 3-mile procession route of double-decker buses surrounded by a blizzard of red and gold confetti.

Media quoted local officials as saying more than a million people were expected for the parade, which took place in unusually sunny and warm conditions in downtown Kansas City. The Chiefs celebrated their third Super Bowl title in five seasons after beating San Francisco in overtime in Las Vegas on Sunday. But the team’s most famous fan — music superstar Taylor Swift, who dates Chiefs icon Travis Kelce — wasn’t part of the festivities. The singer, whose relationship this season with Kells has become a cultural phenomenon, was on her way to Australia, where she has a concert in Melbourne on Friday.
