NEW YORK — A Dominican family is in mourning after a 9-year-old boy did not survive falling from a fourth-story window at the Bronx apartment complex where he was staying Sunday afternoon, authorities announced.
The little boy, who was identified as Miguel Ramos, was left lying on the pavement in front of the building located at 240 Mount Hope Place in the Mount Hope sector where, according to neighbors and friends, he lived with his Dominican mother along with other children.
According to relatives, the boy was non-verbal autistic and played with his seven-year-old brother in the living room of the family’s apartment.
“I’ve known her since 2013, and she’s an excellent mother, cautious, and this case touches me a lot because my girl is also autistic and it makes me feel bad for the child, I’ve known him since he was a newborn,” said Vitznia Santana, a neighbor and friend of the mother.
Authorities responded to the call shortly before 4:15 p.m. when they found the boy unconscious and with injuries from the fall. Ramos was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The mother says that she only went to the bathroom for three minutes and when she returned to the living room, Ramos was not there.
Authorities did not provide further details about the child’s fall. The case remains under investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and will work with partner agencies to determine how an event like this can be prevented in the future,” the New York City Department of Health said.
