The checks take place on all highways from the Netherlands to Antwerp and Limburg. This causes long traffic jams, especially on the E19 and A12. Certain commuters and suppliers are allowed to cross the border, but refueling is not allowed at the southern neighbors.

Frontier workers who work in so-called vital sectors and who exercise a crucial profession can cross the border with a special vignette. It is a criminal offense to violate the prohibition on non-essential travel.
