TPOA Astronomy Show Highlights Space Exploration, Mars Colonization, Exoplanets, and Gold Traces in Space – ITB Astronomers Lead Interactive Presentation

TPOA, the party that organized the show, is the team that manages the National Science Olympiad (OSN) for astronomy at the high school level and also trains the Indonesian representatives for the competition. International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

This presentation was delivered by second and third year ITB astronomy students who are members of the TPOA technical team cadre formation. The TPOA technical team will later take care of the instrument and observational parts of OSN astronomy. Registration for TPOA’s own technical team is opened every 2 years for ITB astronomy students.

The educational sequence for the TPOA technical team usually includes providing astronomy olympiad materials and presentations to the general public. The training aims to ensure that the technical team can properly deliver material on astronomy, which is usually carried out during public evenings in the OSN astronomy implementation series.

The popular astronomy show that was held on Sunday morning was divided into five themes, namely Space Exploration, Planet Mars as a new home, Hilal, Search for Environmental Exoplanets, and Search for Gold Traces in Space.

The discussion on Space Exploration focuses on human exploration of the moon and advances in telescope technology on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Advances in astronomical knowledge gained from JWST technology are also discussed in detail.

The discussion continues about the hilal, starting from the first introduction, how to find the nose, especially in Indonesia, tools that can be used to determine the waist , to misconceptions about the nose that often occur in Indonesia.

The third article discusses the search for habitable exoplanets. The discussion departs from the assumption of life based on carbon as on Earth. During the presentation, it was also discussed how astronomy discovered exoplanets and how to classify the discovered planets.

Not as exciting as the previous discussion, the fourth presentation discusses the planet Mars as a habitable planet. From the history of exploration to Mars to the issue of moving human colonies to Mars. After the presentation was finished, an interesting discussion appeared, for now and for the next few years people are not ready to live on Mars. But why the study of Mars is so enthusiastic at the moment, is to study the content of rare elements on Earth and the possibility of mining them from Mars.

Finally, the presentation discussed Gold Traces in Space. The speaker first discusses the chemical properties of the element gold, and then relates it to the formation of stars.

The entire presentation was interactive, along with the presence of two ITB astronomers, Dr. Hakim Luthfi Malasan, M.Sc. and Evan Irawan Akbar, S.Si., M.Sc. which makes the discussion more interesting.
