Toyota GR86 – Test sharp coupe

Flat atmospheric four-cylinder in the front, small body 2+2 coupe, rear-wheel drive, manual transmission (unless for some reason you pay for an automatic), excellently tuned chassis and tires with not excessive grip. If you check these things off, you’ll probably end up with a fun sports car. This was the case with the Toyota GT86 and it is no different with the GR86.

We were quite afraid that she would come at all. When Toyota introduced the Supra, and after some time introduced its basic four-cylinder variant, the lower end of Toyota’s fun sports cars started to get a bit tight. But fortunately, the marketers found out that the gap is still sufficient, so the smallest coupe earned a successor. It’s still small, it’s still light, but it’s beefed up a bit under the hood.

The re-bored engine has 2.4 liters, 234 hp and 250 Nm. The 20% higher torque comes at 3,700 instead of up to 6,500 rpm, so the car is really more flexible and lively at first glance. In long hills, where the previous generation was a little out of breath, the current one drives as if there were no problems. It’s still not an overpowered car, but that doesn’t matter at all – you have to earn the speed here, you have to shift gears correctly and keep the engine revving. You don’t get anything for free, but if you get into this game, you’ll soon find that the GR86 has exactly the power it should have had from the start.

True, a lot depends on the footwear and I was limited by winter tires. In the summer, you have a choice – the GR86 is fitted with different tires depending on the level of equipment. And I have a feeling that her expression will be quite significantly different. But the main thing remains: Fun to drive with the gas, rich communication between the car and the driver and not being sneaky at the limit, not even a bit beyond it. It’s a pity that we will have to say goodbye to this car again soon… You will find out the reason in the video, as well as a lot of other information.
