Toyota and Honda recall millions of cars due to airbag problems NOW

Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda recall millions of cars because of problems with airbags, both manufacturers announced on Tuesday. At Toyota, it concerns 3.4 million cars worldwide and at Honda, 2.7 million vehicles in the United States.

The Toyota models have airbags on board that do not fold out completely or not at all due to an electronic malfunction. These are Corolla, Matrix, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid models from different construction years.

Also at Honda, the problems can prevent the airbags from being fully inflated, which can lead to casualties. This concerns airbags on older models of the Honda Civic and models of Acura, which were produced between 1996 and 2003.

The problematic airbags of both car manufacturers come from the same company: Takata in Japan. That company almost went bankrupt in 2017 and was subsequently taken over by a Chinese company.

According to Honda, it can take a while before the airbags are made. The company writes in a statement that the inspection and repairs of the cars will start in a year’s time, as replacement parts from other companies are not yet available.

Toyota has only said that the Toyota owners will receive a message mid-March about a possible recall of the vehicles. The recall does not apply to Corolla in the Netherlands. The Matrix and Avalon are not delivered in our country, according to the importer.
