Since the beginning of the year, the price of food has been constantly climbing at the grocery store and this phenomenon should affect chickpeas in the coming months, due to a possible shortage.
“Canadian production is likely to be lower and we are the 9th largest producer. One of the biggest is Russia and no one is going to buy from them. Then he has Ukraine and we know their situation. There will be a deficit of chickpeas”, mentions Sylvain Charlebois of the Agri-Food Analytical Sciences Laboratory at Dalhousie University.
The repercussions in several Asian and European countries are likely to be greater than here, but the effects on the portfolio will be felt among Canadians.
