Susan Daboll Solo Exhibition: “Whose History Is It Anyway” – 2024-04-30 21:22:49

Curator Kostas Prapoglou presents Susan Daboll’s solo exhibition at the gallery of the historical Parnassos Philological Association in Athens. Born and raised in America, Daboll’s artistic journey has been deeply influenced by her environment and family history, resulting in the production of a vast body of work that reflects both the fascination and multiplicity of our reality.

The visual language of visual arts is felt through the exploration of human experience and perception of existence. The exhibition whose history is it anyway? borrows its title from the homonymous body of work created by Daboll in 1986.

Exuding a sense of lost landscapes, her series of installations that surface like samples of psychological biography embrace the universality of emotion and an inherent dignity. At the heart of Daboll’s artistic practice lies a deep empathy and social consciousness. In a world increasingly characterized by technological advancement and social upheaval, her work stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of the soul and its adventures into unknown territories.

Exuding far beyond a simple aesthetic, Daboll’s artistic and visual versatility is evident in her ability to manage color, as well as her varied media and techniques. Black and white gelatin silver prints, various types of film, collages, color polaroids, Diana camera photos, printed fabrics and other digital prints are all masterfully orchestrated and in dialogue with furniture and other found objects that all hold special meaning to her.

Navigating the realm of the human condition, the artist imbues her work with a thorough understanding of emotions and experiences. Through her gifted artistic gaze, she contemplates the complexity of life, offering us fleeting glimpses into the innermost depths of the soul.

One of the recurring themes of the works presented in the exhibition is the dimension of physical or non-physical presence. Central to Daboll’s work is the evocative power of portraiture as a representation of metaphysical entities. Starting from her own deep feelings that remained buried for years, she explores the complexity of them [δια]personal relationships, capturing the essence of their spirit with remarkable power and empathy.
