TELEVISION – For his 15th birthday, Top Boss offers a 15-star and above all equal jury. The cooking competition show returns this Wednesday March 13 at 9:10 p.m. on M6. For this season 15, two new faces join Philippe Etchebest, Hélène Darroze, Paul Pairet and Glenn Viel on the jury: Stéphanie Le Quellec, winner of season 2 of Top Boss now a double-starred chef, and Dominique Crenn, the only triple-starred woman in the United States.

This year, the cooks will be divided into two brigades, led on one side by Philippe Etchebest, Paul Pairet and Glenn Viel, and on the other by Hélène Darroze, Stéphanie Le Quellec and Dominique Crenn. Once the competition is at a more advanced stage, the seven leaders will form separate brigades to lead their respective candidates to victory.

“I think it was first of all the desire to be three friends among six friends”says chef Stéphanie Le Quellec in a video interview at HuffPost. An impression shared by Hélène Darroze, who is on her tenth participation: “It was the year I had the most fun, maybe because I felt less alone”she jokes.

Top Chef 2024: a female jury

This is the first time in the history of the culinary competition that there are so many women jurors. Since its creation in 2010, only Ghislaine Arabian and Hélène Darroze have held this role, separately. After fifteen seasons of Top BossM6 finally seems to have heard the criticisms about this lack of representation. “It’s something new for many shows, in France and in the United Stateswelcomes Dominique Crenn.

But in the kitchens of restaurants and Top Boss, parity is still far away. This year again, there are only five female candidates for twelve men, a proportion similar to past seasons. Dominique Crenn hopes that the new jury will inspire vocations among spectators, and especially female spectators: “It will perhaps make them want not only to bake but also to be a chef.” For Stéphanie Le Quellec, this equal jury sends a nice message: “Ladies, don’t be afraid to take the plunge, don’t be afraid to dare because it’s a profession that also leaves room for women today.”

“It shows that our profession is evolving, that there are more and more women and that’s so much the better”affirms Hélène Darroze, before adding “even if there aren’t enough.” Although they say they are not always aware of it, the three Michelin-starred chefs are helping to inspire more women to enter a profession that is still dominated by men.

The world of gastronomy not yet equal

Unlike the new Top Chef jury, parity is far from being achieved in the world of gastronomy, even if things are changing. “If I have to compare with my arrival in the kitchen 25 years ago where in a brigade of 80 cooks there were two young women, the proportion increases”, observes Stéphanie Le Quellec. According to her, with the two other chefs who are also mothers, they are the example that we can “reconcile family life and professional life”.

“We are in the business of transmission and I think we are the bridge for the new generation”believes Dominique Crenn, who notes that the country of gastronomy is lucky to have such models of success: “You have great chefs who are women in France.”

For Hélène Darroze, “it’s so much the better if we can show that everything is possible and that you have to believe in your dreams.” For the sixteen candidates of season 15, the dream begins with a victory in Top Boss. Without being able to reveal too much, Hélène Darroze promised a season full of twists and turns and above all, “a lovely birthday”.
