Tonight we know more: will catering and schools remain closed after April 6? | NOW

A press conference scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 7 pm will clarify how after 6 April it will continue with the current measures to further contain the spread of the coronavirus. The cabinet will conduct another crisis meeting on Tuesday.

On Monday, sources from The Hague reported to NU.nl that many of the current measures will be extended to an as yet unknown date. In any case, this would mean that after Monday April 6 there will still be working at home as much as possible.

Schools, childcare centers and catering establishments are also unlikely to open their doors after April 6. Finally, the ban on gathering three or more people will continue to apply and the Dutch will still have to keep a distance of 1.5 meters.

The cabinet is advised on taking decisions by a team of experts, the so-called Outbreak Management Team (OMT). Jaap van Dissel, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control at RIVM, heads this team.

Fines up to 4,000 euros for violations

On March 23, Prime Minister Mark Rutte already announced that existing measures were being tightened. For example, from that date, mayors were empowered to fine companies and individuals for failing to comply with the rules.

This mainly concerns the ban on gathering three or more persons. The fine can be up to around 4,000 euros for a company, and around 400 euros for private individuals.

Finally, all meetings that require a permit will also be prohibited until June 1. It is partly for this reason that the measures are likely to be extended further until 6 April.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
