The Togolese government dismissed 112 teachers, which were available to the civil service. The measure comes after the slogans of strike which had been launched by the Union of Teachers of the Togo (SET), an organization whose government denies the legality

The 112 teachers strikers were dismissed yesterday Monday, April 25, 2022 according to two decrees signed by the Togolese Minister of Public service, Gilbert Bawara.

As grounds for dismissal, it is alleged that the 112 teachers dismissed from the public service for serious breaches of the laws and regulations in force and of the standards of ethics and professional conduct governing civil servants, such as “acts of notorious incivility, incitement to violence, disobedience and revolt , as well as actions attributable to them, which have caused disturbances and disturbances in schools and in certain localities”.

While the first decree dismisses 86 civil servants, the second concerns 26 trainee civil servants who are also dismissed for the same reasons. It should be added that at the same time, 26 other teachers, previously paid into the public service, were reinstated in their functions.

The fate that the Togolese government has just reserved for teachers in the SET comes after they have been returned to the civil service. Within the framework of the repeated strikes of the SETthree teachers were arrested and sent to the civil prison of Lomé.

Contrary to the legality that the government disputes in SET, officials of this union maintain that their existence is legal. The striking teachers demand, among other things, a monthly housing bonus (50,000 F.CFA at least) for any teacher without distinction in reference to the education reform of 1975 and an annual bonus for distance (minimum 300 F.CFA/Km ).
