To strengthen consumer rights: Altmaier announces reform in the Postal Act

The complaints about package deliveries are increasing. Economics Minister wants to make service providers more responsible for defects in the future. The entire postal law is to be revised for this.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier has announced a reform of the postal law. “In view of the growing number of complaints, especially in the area of parcel delivery, we want to strengthen consumer rights,” Altmaier told the “Bild” newspaper according to a preliminary report. He would therefore submit a revised Postal Act in early 2020.

In future, service providers should be forced to take part in arbitration proceedings by the Federal Network Agency in the event of a dispute over defects. If necessary, fines threatened. According to the newspaper, it is unclear whether Monday will be abolished as a delivery date.

The number of complaints about non-sent or late mail has increased significantly: in 2018, the number of complaints doubled compared to 2017. The Greens also spoke out in favor of punishing postal and parcel services for poor performance.
