Tips for Avoiding Errors and Ensuring Correct Completion of Electronic Tax Forms

Taxpayers are asked to send their tax form electronically to the Mauritius Revenue Authority no later than October 16. During this exercise, errors may be made. How to avoid them and how to ensure that the forms are completed correctly? Explanations.

Dependent child

Often both spouses claim the deduction for a dependent child in their respective returns. ” It is not allowed. Only one of the spouses can claim the deduction for the dependent child,” explains an official from the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). Indeed, it happens that divorced/separated parents claim a tax reduction for the same dependent child in their respective declaration. On the other hand, a taxpayer cannot claim the deduction for a child who is over 18 years old and who is not pursuing full-time studies.

Housing loan

A taxpayer cannot claim interest relief on a home loan if the interest paid does not relate to a home loan and the loan is not secured by a mortgage or fixed charge.

Dependent spouse

A dependent spouse deduction is not allowable when the taxpayer is not married. “The taxpayer should be able to present, when required, a copy of a civil or religious marriage certificate to prove that he is married,” specifies our interlocutor.

Non-declaration/under-declaration

Some taxpayers do not report income from various sources to the MRA. “Invigilation fees, director fees, old age pension and other pensions from the Ministry of Social Security, tuition and lecture fees must be declared. »

Sending to MRA

Some taxpayers complete their returns, but do not send them to the MRA. After filling out the form, they forget to press the “Submit” button before logging out. “To ensure you have submitted your return, request an acknowledgment ID,” says the MRA.

29,936 files received to date

The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) received 29,936 tax slips as of Friday September 8. Facilities for taxpayers to declare their income and make tax payments are available on the MRA website. Taxpayers are asked to send their form no later than Monday October 16.
