Tiger attack – Bitten by a tiger

A 23-year-old man died on Tuesday after being bitten in the arm by a tiger in a private zoo where he worked.

The man is identified as José de Jesús, according to Mexico News Daily.

The attack took place in a private zoo in Peribán, Michoacán, northwest of the capital Mexico City, on Sunday, June 12.

In the video, which is to be filmed in connection with feeding, the man is seen sticking his hand in through the fence. He pats the tiger for a while before slashing him in the arm without warning.

According to the Mexican website, Jesús allegedly fed the tiger with the other arm, which is not visible in the video.

The feline should be of the Bengal tiger type.

Denied amputation

Jesús was transported to a local hospital in Michoacán for treatment. He was later transferred to a hospital in the city of Morelia.

According to the newspaper The universal the 23-year-old is said to have refused to have his arm amputated. As a result, his condition worsened.

Two days after the incident, he died at the hospital of a heart attack.

The owner of the private zoo where Jesús worked claims to have permission to own several exotic animals, including the aforementioned tiger and an African lion, writes El Universal.

Must be transferred

According to the newspaper The Voice of Michoacan the tiger’s enclosure in the private zoo shall nevertheless not have met the safety requirements.

The tiger will now be transferred to the Morelia Zoo.

– This type of species is easy to get on the black market. I do not know if this is the case here. That must be decided by PROFEPA and the prosecution, says owner and director of the Morelia Zoo, Julio César Medina Ávila, to La Voz de Michoacán.

PROFEPA stands for Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente and is Mexico’s state environmental agency.

Medina Ávila also emphasizes that the tiger’s attack was not because it was aggressive, but as a reaction to the man’s invasion.

Tiger wandering the streets

According to the Mexico News Daily, a Bengal tiger was spotted in the city of Tecuala along the west coast of Mexico the same week. The tiger is said to have wandered around a residential area before it was captured.

According to El Universal, the animal had escaped from a house where it was being held captive.

Bengal tigers, also called royal tigers, are a subspecies of tiger and are found primarily in India, but also exist in small populations in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and in parts of China.

According to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Bengal tiger can weigh over 250 kilograms and measure almost three meters from head to tail, and is the national animal in both India and Bangladesh.
