Campus-A rare event will happen on Thursday, April 20, 2023 . At that time, almost all parts of Indonesia will be able to observe the solar eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, completely or partially obscuring the earth’s view of the sun. This configuration can only occur during a new moon, when the sun and moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth.

Through an online colloquium organized by the Astronomy study program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences ITB (FMIPA ITB), Bosscha Observatory explained about the plan to welcome the 2023 Total Solar Eclipse with the “Eclipse Education for Schools and Society” program on Friday (10/6/22). ).

The speaker at the event, Yatny Yulianti from the Bosscha Observatory, explained that almost all land areas in Indonesia will be passed by a complete and almost complete total solar eclipse.

“Various areas that will be traversed by the total path of the 2023 total solar eclipse in Indonesia are eastern Indonesia, such as Papua, West Papua and Maluku. Meanwhile, various areas that received an almost complete eclipse were Ambon and Kupang. For areas on the islands of Java and Bali, around 38% to 69% eclipses,” Yatni explained as quoted from the itb.ac.id page.

A small number of areas on the island of Sumatra, such as Padang and Pekanbaru, said Yatni, only received eclipses of 9% to 12%. The city of Bandung will get a solar eclipse of 42.81%.

To welcome the 2023 total solar eclipse, Bosscha Observatory has prepared an educational program aimed at school students, teachers, educational facilitators, and the amateur astronomer community. The material that will be explained is material related to the earth – moon – sun system which complements teaching materials at school in a simple, clear, and effective manner.

“For outpuBy the way, it is hoped that teaching materials can be easily delivered in the form of a prototype solar eclipse education package for schools and also educational activities and solar eclipse observations for schools,” explained Yatny.

Broadly speaking, the Eclipse Educational Package is intended to assist teachers in presenting the science of astronomy to children 4 to 13 years of age throughout Indonesia.

“The contents of the Eclipse 2023 Education Package that will be provided include brochures, pocket books, sun glasses, posters, guide documents, eclipse data sheets at the destination location, evaluation documents, aluminum foil sheets, UNAWE Indonesia & Bosscha Observatory stickers, health masks, and USB memory card“said Yatny.

In addition, educational programs are also provided for the public that will provide information related to eclipses that is easily accessible and understandable through the GMT 2023 website page and campaigns through brochures and social media called eclipse science dissemination. Bosscha Observatory also plans to conduct observations of the solar eclipse with the community in locations that are passed by the eclipse path through eclipse expedition activities and also through the live streaming.
