Thuringia Plans to Increase Funding for Theaters and Orchestras

Thuringia wants to spend more money on theaters and orchestras in the future. From 2025 onwards, expenditure should gradually increase – from the current 85 million to 115 million euros in 2032. This emerges from a cabinet decision presented by Minister of Culture Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff (left) on Tuesday in Erfurt. However, 2028 should be renegotiated.

No new divisions

Hoff said that historically grown structures could be preserved with the new foundation. “We cannot finance new divisions,” he emphasized. With the growth, above all, rising costs would be absorbed, which would result from wage increases for theater employees, for example. According to Hoff, the houses in Erfurt, Jena and Rudolstadt should pay area wages. At the Gotha location, for example, the goal is 90 percent of the collectively agreed wage. In this way, the houses should be able to get qualified staff in the future.

The state had been discussing future financing with the municipalities involved for over a year. The negotiations involved twelve theaters and orchestras. Most of these are owned by local authorities and are co-financed by the state.
