Threat of provincial government Leeuwarden passed after about two hours

A police spokesperson confirmed this. About 140 to 150 people were in the building during the closure of the provincial government building, a spokesman for the province reported earlier this afternoon.

Dozens of protesters

The police said this afternoon they had ‘vacated all buildings around the Tweebaksmarkt’. Dozens of protesters stood in front of the provincial government building.

It is not yet known whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the threat. The investigation into “the nature, background and origin of the report” is still ongoing, the police said.

The protests at the provincial government house were directed against the cabinet’s nitrogen policy, a municipal spokesperson said. According to Frisian media, an earlier call was made to demonstrate against the nitrogen rules on Wednesday.

A council meeting was in progress in the provincial house. It just went ahead, said the provincial spokesman. The spokesman for the provincial government said that the Assembly is ‘about everything except nitrogen’. It was the last meeting before the summer recess.

All the other employees in the building were seated together in one room. The spokesperson said fewer people were inside than usual as a work-from-home advisory had been issued amid anticipated protests. “Not everyone likes having to go through that in and out of the building.”
