Three researchers from the University of Liège spotted continuous winds of 100 km / h on the southern tip of Greenland. “If we installed thousands of wind turbines, they say, we could ensure green energy for the whole of Europe. “

You would think you were back in the days of the gold diggers. Three Liège scientists have prepared an expedition which leaves this weekend from Saint-Malo and which has for destination the southern tip of Greenland. Its goal ? Install three automatic weather stations there to check in the field if their mathematical model is real.
And what exactly is it? “In the south of Greenland there is a particular weather phenomenon,” explains Damien Ernst, professor and specialist in electricity at ULiège. There are always the conjunction of two important winds:
– a wind synoptic often associated with an anticyclone centered on Iceland
– and a wind catabatique which descends from the glaciers of Greenland and which takes advantage of the temperature inversion to sink towards the sea.
► Exceptional report on the spot.
