Thousands of Bitcoin Mining Tools Crushed Using Stoom

Sarawak, Malaysia

Malaysian government raids mining cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in Sarawak. The evidence was then destroyed by being run over with a stoom-type heavy vehicle.

As quoted detikINET from Engadget, Monday (7/19/2021) as many as 1,069 crypto mining tools such as Bitcoin and Ethereum were destroyed. The PC machine was taken in six raids that were held between February and April in 2021.

The miners were found guilty of illegally stealing electricity from power company Sarawak Energy Berhad. The Bitcoin mining operator was accused of stealing electrical energy with a value of around USD 2 million.

Local authorities also arrested six suspects aged between 24 and 64 years. The police said that the illegal mining of cryptocurrencies in the Sarawak area has recently become increasingly widespread, so they have taken strict action. The destruction of the mining equipment was carried out by court order.

Those who want to mine Bitcoin, Ethereum and others use modified PCs and usually consume a lot of energy. This energy waste is also what makes Bitcoin mining a lot of criticism because it is considered harmful to the environment.

Earlier in Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) raided a crypto mine in the city of Vinnytsia and confiscated hundreds of GPUs, dozens of processors, and 3,800 PS4 units.

The PS4 variant used in this mine is the PS4 Slim, which was released in 2016, which is no faster than the original PS4 and definitely slower than the PS4 Pro.

This PS4 seems to have been chosen because Ethereum mining also relies on memory bandwidth, not just on computing capabilities. This is where the PS4 and PS4 Slim are used, because these consoles have a bandwidth of up to 176GB/s from the GDDR5 memory chip used.
