The German Thomas Tuchel was named Chelsea’s new manager, replacing Englishman Frank Lampard, fired on Monday (25.01.2021) for poor results, less than a month after facing Atlético de Madrid in the second round of the Liga de Champions.
Tuchel, 47, who coached Paris SG until December 29, arrives at Stamford Bridge in order to fight for qualification for the next Champions League, which Chelsea (9th in the Premier League) have four points behind, and will debut this Wednesday in the match against Wolvehampton in the 20th round of the English league.
“Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as Chelsea’s new manager,” the club announced in a statement on Tuesday (26.01.2021).
“He will be the first German to coach Chelsea and he comes after having led PSG to four titles and the Champions League final,” he said.
“Before that, he spent seven seasons as a coach in the Bundesliga, first with Mainz (Mainz), where he led them to the Europa League, and then a successful period with Borussia Dortmund, where he won the German Cup,” he added.
“I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my team,” Tuchel, who also had words for his predecessor in office, said in the statement.
“We all have the utmost respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea. At the same time, I can’t wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I’m grateful to be a part of it now. Chelsea family, it feels amazing! “
This announcement comes the day after the dismissal of Lampard, Stamford Bridge legend and top scorer in club history, with whom he played from 2001 to 2014. Lampard was fired for failing to keep the Blues in the top ranks of the table, despite the important additions for this season.
The London team currently occupies ninth place in the Premier League, eleven points behind leaders Manchester United. One of the most important events that Tuchel will have in his first half season at Chelsea will be the round of 16 tie against Atlético de Madrid, with the first leg scheduled at the Metropolitan Stadium on 23 February.
