This may determine the Petito case

US authorities had hoped that Brian Laundrie (23) could help shed light on how Gabby Petitos (22) was doing in the last days.

They never got the opportunity to do that, then Laundrie’s remains were found Wednesday last week.

Laundrie was found in one of Florida’s many nature reserves, near a wooded area in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.

According to the Laundrie family’s lawyer, Steven Bertolino, it was Brian Laundrie’s parents who asked the police to search this area.

During the summer, the couple went on a car trip, from which Laundrie returned to North Port, Florida, alone on September 1, police say.

On September 11, Petito’s parents reported that she was missing. Laundrie did not speak to authorities for the next two days, before leaving his home on September 13. He was not seen again until search crews found him dead last Wednesday.

Did not find the answer

Monday reports CNN that one of the Laundrie family’s lawyers has said that the preliminary autopsy report came back as “incomplete”.

“Brian Laundrie’s autopsy has not provided an answer to the cause of death, and his remains are now being transferred to a forensic anthropologist,” lawyer Steven Bertolino told CNN.

Bertolino says the family plans to cremate Laundrie’s remains and does not want a funeral.

Petito’s remains were discovered in Grand Teton National Park in the US state of Wyoming on September 19. The autopsy report shows that the 22-year-old died suffocation and the FBI describes it as a murder.

The public has not been told much more about the course of events.

Several unanswered questions

The fact that the police did not find Brian Laundrie alive means that they are still sitting with many unanswered questions.

Several experts have now commented on what they know and what may have happened to Petito, just before she was killed.

During a news conference, forensic pathologist Brent Blue in Teton County, Wyoming, told about the first results of the autopsy report.

It turns out that she was strangled and that it was a murder. He stated that she was strangled by a person.

Blue estimates that the 22-year-old was killed three to four weeks before she was found dead on September 19 in Bridger-Teton National Park.

Complex case

Paul Belli, a retired lieutenant in the Sacramento County sheriff’s office and president of the International Homicide Investigators Association, makes it clear to CNN that they are facing a very complex case.

– Fingerprints will probably be found on both, but it will not necessarily confirm that it was Laundrie who killed the victim. They were lovers until the death and it is common to find DNA from the partner.

Furthermore, Belli says that if they find fingerprints in unusual places on Petito, it may give them some clues.

Key elements

Investigators are also looking at the seized items they found, which Laundrie and Petito brought with them on their road trip.

Among other things, a notebook has been found, which is carefully examined by analysts, to see if there is anything in it that can provide further answers. The notebook was found in a backpack, which was found with Laundrie’s remains last week.

A hard drive was also found in the car the former boyfriend and girlfriend were driving around in, when they were on a car holiday this summer.

Authorities hope to find Laundrie’s phone soon. Belli says that such a discovery can give them an incredible amount of new information. CNN has previously written that Laundrie left her home without a wallet and phone.

In addition to this, they are looking for possible videos of Laundrie and Petito, which the authorities hope can help put together a clearer picture of what happened to Gabby Petito.
