“This is a first for all of us. We’ve never seen this ourselves. We’ve seen baby whales shortly after birth, we’ve seen baby dolphins that are less than an hour old, but this is our first time.” . the captain said over the loudspeaker after delivery.
The moment of the baby whale’s birth was captured with several smartphones, video cameras and even a drone.
When the captain and crew first spotted the whale, they assumed it was injured from being covered in blood. True, soon concern was replaced by joy, for it was revealed that the female whale was not dying, but she was giving birth to a new life.
“It’s amazing that they’ve already been born with the knowledge that you can’t breathe underwater,” added the captain.
Gray whales are usually one year pregnant and give birth in shallow lagoons.
