Two police officers were shot Monday, one fatally, while serving a warrant in San Luis Obispo, California, according to authorities.

The shots were fired around 5:20 p.m. when officers carried out the warrant at an apartment in the city, according to reports.

One of the officers was killed in the shooting, while the other was taken to an area hospital in stable condition, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

The suspect was killed by police, authorities said.

“Suspect has passed away and there is no threat to public safety at this time,” the department tweeted.

Victoria Torres, a 21-year-old neighbor, said she was upstairs in her room when she heard “a very loud bang” in an apartment in front of her.

“I don’t know if it was the police or what,” he told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. “I always hear noises here, so I didn’t think of anything until I heard the gunshots.”

Torres said he went downstairs, looked out of a window and saw a man with a “big gun” who started shooting at officers from an apartment door. She noticed officers were hiding behind her car, the newspaper reported.

“I was quite shocked and scared,” she said. I just hid myself. I looked out the window again when silence fell. Because I wasn’t sure what happened.

Soon after, Torres said he decided not to look anymore because “it was too scary,” according to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Another resident, Monica Rochte, 31, told the newspaper that she heard police knocking on the door of an apartment across the street, saying, “Let’s go inside. We know you are there.

Rochte said the screaming continued before he heard a bang and then a single shot. Then he heard the police yelling “He’s got a gun!” before a series of 15 to 20 shots was fired.
