On May 6, the Berlin police sent a document to the organizers of the commemorative events on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the Victory, which states that the use of any symbolism of Ukraine during visits to the monuments of World War II is prohibited.

“We are shocked that the Berlin police banned the wearing of flags associated with Ukraine on May 8 and 9. This is a slap in the face for Ukraine and a slap in the face for the Ukrainian people,” Andriy Melnyk was indignant at the ban.

The Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin called the equating of Ukrainian symbols in this way with the symbols of a country that commits war crimes against the civilian population of Ukraine, “a huge scandal.”

“This is not only a sign of a lack of tact, but also a disastrous political decision,” Melnik said.

Andriy Melnyk noted that against such a background, all Germany’s assurances of solidarity with Ukraine under attack are “an empty phrase.”

“One can understand the efforts of the police to ensure security. But the fact that the victim nation and the perpetrators are equated with each other is simply outrageous,” Melnik criticized this decision of the Berlin authorities.

Melnik called on the local authorities in Berlin to “immediately reverse this dubious decision.”

  • More than 50 commemorative events and demonstrations dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II are registered in Berlin on May 8 and 9. The police sees a “risk situation” and prohibits the use of flags and symbols for this time, including Ukrainian ones.
