By celebrating his 20th birthday on April 24, this dog has just become the oldest Golden Retriever Of the history. August or “Augie” lives with her masters, Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt, in Oakland, Tennessee (United States).
Adopted by the couple at 14 years old!
But the animal, born in 2000, lived in two other homes before being adopted by the couple. Augie was then already 14 years old. “They thought most people would not want such a Golden Golden, but had no idea how far Augie had yet to go,” said rescue group GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue on its Facebook page.
Travel, swimming and big family
And the couple took good care of the dog: “They took her on motorhome trips all over the country, she has several canine and feline brothers and sisters, and she can play fetching in the pool” .
A Golden Retriever lives between 10 and 12 years old
This exceptional longevity is ultimately a great reward for the couple. And for good reason, on average, a Golden Retriever lives between 10 and 12 years old. That is to say that when it was adopted, Augie was had already exceeded the average life time of its congeners. Besides, she may be 20 years old, her mistress explains that her pet is still “surprisingly healthy” despite some tremors when she has to get up, she still continues to move well and take daily walks .
Obviously, as we can see in the photos shared on the Facebook page GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue, Augie has gray hair. This does not prevent him from getting on his 31st to celebrate this event with great pomp crowned with a “carrot cake suitable for dogs”.
