What if beer has beneficial effects on the brain? According to a Japanese study, published recently in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, mature hops, an important component of beer, can improve cognitive abilities.

Good news for beer lovers: it is now scientifically proven that the bitter acid found in mature hops, also known as MHBA, could help fight memory loss. This is the conclusion drawn by researchers from the University of Juntendo and the Fukushima Health Center, recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
“This study suggests that taking MHBA improves cognitive ability, attention and mood in the elderly,” concludes the study that looked at the benefits of the ingredient that gives beer its bitterness. .
12 weeks of experience
As part of the study, an experiment was carried out on 100 patients aged 45 to 69 years. All participants were in good health but had subjective cognitive decline, such as memory loss. While, during the 12 weeks of the experiment, half of them received a daily dose of MHBA, the other half took a placebo.
After three months, the researchers found that participants who had taken the MHBA supplement were able to solve mental puzzles more easily than those who did not, which shows a marked improvement in cognitive abilities that beer can provide.
