Thierry Baudet, Leader of Forum for Democracy Party, Attacked with Beer Bottle: Updates on His Condition

NOS News•today, 09:31•Changed today, 10:01

It is still unclear how Forum for Democracy party leader Thierry Baudet is doing after the attack with a beer bottle last night. His party has not yet provided an update on his condition.

The politician was in a Groningen café for an election meeting, together with other (candidate) MPs from his party. Images show a boy lashing out at Baudet. A minor suspect has been arrested, his age has not been released.

FvD announced yesterday on social medium X that Baudet had been taken to the hospital in Groningen. “A trauma surgeon has just treated Thierry Baudet at the UMCG. He was hit on the back of the head with a beer bottle and was also hit on the edge of his temple just next to his eye.”

Politicians made themselves heard at X last night. Prime Minister Rutte mentions a post on X the attack “totally unacceptable”. Rutte: “I said it before and repeat it now: you stay away from politicians. Always.” Party leaders from BBB, GroenLinks-PvdA, NSC, PVV, CDA, ChristenUnie, SP, Volt, Denk and Party for the Animals also condemned the violence.

Almost a month ago, Baudet was hit on the head with an umbrella during a visit to Ghent University. He suffered a mild concussion and halted his campaign for a few days.

Following that incident, FvD decided on one fundraiser for the personal security of Baudet and other FvD MPs. “We have had direct consultations with various security experts and have come to the conclusion that we must seriously increase the security of Thierry – and that of our other MPs,” the party wrote in response to the action. The stake was 100,000 euros, of which more than 97,000 euros have now been raised.
