A ventilation system, water, electricity and even a rail system. This is the “most sophisticated tunnel in the history of the United States”, the authorities assured this Thursday.
The tunnel, incomplete and intended for smuggling, runs from San Luis, Arizona, to a Mexican neighborhood. It has extensive reinforcement and shoring using a technique known for its common use in sophisticated underground tunnels.
The clandestine passageway is approximately 1,300 feet long, three feet wide and four feet high, according to authorities.
“This appears to be the most sophisticated tunnel in US history and it is surely the most sophisticated I have seen in my career,” said Carl E. Landrum, Acting Chief of the Border Patrol in the Yuma sector.
Special agents from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) discovered the cross-border tunnel that was not yet finished Tuesday after several days digging in the desert near the city of Yuma, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) reported in Arizona. in a press release.
In mid-July, federal agents discovered a sinkhole near the border in the Yuma area. HSI special agents came to the area to investigate, with the help of Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector.
Shortly after, pieces of wood and underground water hoses were discovered. Agents sent a camera 25 feet deep after discovering a sinkhole in the area of an investigation, which revealed the cross-border tunnel.
At the moment no arrested person is reported and the investigation continues.
