They defend Acevedo Vilá in his fight with Carrión III

Dr. Ada Álvarez Conde, candidate for the Senate for accumulation by the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) in the next elections, said that Aníbal Acevedo Vilá has every reason to require the Fiscal Control Board to make public the data of the negotiations which is being carried out on the debt of Puerto Rico.

“The $ 64,700,000 that federal instrumentality spent in 2019 is paid by us Puerto Rican taxpayers. That is $ 12.3 million more compared to 2018. It is highly irregular for the president of the Board, José Carrión III to deny the country important information related to the money generated by Puerto Ricans, ”said the candidate to the legislature.

Carrión’s letter is in response to a letter that the current candidate for resident commissioner of Puerto Rico in Washington sent on February 19 in which he requested details of the negotiation of the agreement for the restructuring of the country’s debt.

“The Board alleges that it has reached an agreement with most bondholders, but the reality is that this agreement was accepted only by bondholders who own $ 8 billion in debt, which is far from the total of $ 35 billion dollars owed. With that misrepresented information published by the Board, there is no one who believes it, ”said Álvarez Conde, who has been consistent in claiming the debt audit. “How do you intend to negotiate payments when there are so many doubts, so many information gaps? There is no way to do things correctly if the debt is not audited, ”he said.

The specialist on issues of violence, women and youth also criticized that Carrión III, apart from denying the requested information, argued that Acevedo Vilá was responsible for part of Puerto Rico’s public debt.

“Carrión is (or was) brother-in-law of candidate Pedro Pierluisi, who was a member of the Luis Fortuño government. Everyone knows that Fortuño is the governor who has issued the most debt to the country in our history and at the moment Carrión has not questioned Fortuño. In fact, debt issues during the four-year period of Acevedo Vilá would not have been possible without the approval of the Legislature dominated by the New Progressive Party, ”he concluded.
