They ask to give palliative care

To attend to the pain of millions of people due to health conditions in the elderly or in childhood, it is required that schools and medical schools teach the Palliative Care subject, proposed Senator Miguel Ángel Mancera Espinosa, coordinator of the PRD bench.

He explained that the plenary supported this initiative, so he directed an appeal to the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to analyze and, where appropriate, include the comprehensive treatment of pain.

The Upper House proposed that the agency, as well as public and private institutions of higher education that offer careers related to the area of Health, include in their plans and curricula some subject related to palliative care.

The Senate, Mancera recalled, has approved a constitutional reform, last July, which includes in article 4 the right to this treatment and is under review in the Chamber of Deputies.

The legislator referred to the importance of teaching the subject from the beginning of medical studies in all schools and faculties in which specialists are trained.

Palliative care, he explained, is an optional subject in some universities and in others it is taught at the specialty level.

He gave the context of the growing need for these measures, noting that “the generational curve shows that we are going to be more and more elderly in this country, so the possibility of requiring this type of care is latent.”

In Mexico, 27% of the population suffers or will suffer, according to the prognosis, chronic pain, he said.

He added that at least 16,000 children die with suffering each year, a figure that constitutes 42% of mortality nationwide.
