The bosses of “Slavyanska beseda” want a rent of BGN 1,000 per day.
The “Tear and Laughter” theater may remain on the street, the Ministry of Culture warned on Thursday. The reason is that the bosses of “Slavyanska Beseda” have given the artists an uncompromising ultimatum – either by January 10, they sign a rental contract in the amount of BGN 360,000 per year, or they will be forcibly evicted from the building. The price that the management of the community center is asking for is BGN 1,000 per day, according to the office of Vezhdi Rashidov.
It was there that the warning letter of the chairman of “Slavyanska beseda” Petar Raizhekov, who is a former actor from the “Tear and Laughter” theater, was received.
“Tear and Laughter” has been located on Sofia’s theater street “Rakovski” № 127 for 42 years. In the last ten years, the building has been repaired several times and completely rebuilt, which is why the state has given more than BGN 3 million. Only in August of last year, the Ministry of Culture urgently provided BGN 50,000 to repair the roof, which burned down after a fire.
Due to the ultimatum of “Slavyanska beseda”, it is possible that 110 prominent Bulgarian actors and five established private troupes will remain on the street, the Ministry of Culture warned. From there they recall that according to the law on community centers they are independent legal entities, non-governmental organizations that have their own governing bodies.
“The rent that the community center is asking for is unbearable for us,” Vasil Banov, administrative deputy director of “Tear and Laughter”, told BNews. He explained that the theater has not paid rent so far and that the two institutions have been fighting for this for 18-19 years. Banov also said that a lot of money was invested in the building. He calculated them at BGN 6 million, which were given for the stage, projector, chairs, etc. The theater made its stage available twice a week for events of the community center and served it administratively.
