These are the worst foods for prediabetes

Foods in the category of refined carbohydrates are not recommended for diabetics.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are above normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Unmanaged prediabetes can develop into type 2 diabetes.

One of the most important efforts that need to be made to prevent prediabetes from becoming diabetes is to improve diet. The worst type of food for people with diabetes is refined carbohydrates.

Refined carbohydrates are foods that contain added sugar, sweeteners, and white flour in them. Refined carbohydrates are generally ultra-processed food which no longer contains significant nutritional value.

Some examples of food sources refined carbohydrates are white bread, crackers, cakes, and pies. These foods have a high glycemic index which can trigger a rapid spike in blood sugar levels after consumption. This spike occurs because the protein and fiber content in these foods is low.

Refined carbohydrates are also not only low in vitamins and minerals, but also lack the nutrients that can help control hunger and appetite. Some examples are protein, healthy fats, and fiber. Without these components, it would be very easy for a person to consume excess calories and still feel hungry or dissatisfied.

This impact will be felt even more if the intake of refined carbohydrates comes in the form of beverages, such as fruit juices, sodas, and sweet teas. These sugary drinks can make a person consume more calories than they need without realizing it.

Apart from that, it does not mean people with prediabetes should be hostile to all types of carbohydrates. Basically, carbohydrate intake is still needed to support the body in its activities.

However, it would be better if the type of carbohydrate consumed is complex carbohydrates that contain lots of fiber. High-fiber carbohydrates can provide a better feeling of fullness, are nutritious, and are more friendly to blood sugar levels.

As reported EatThisSome examples of sources of complex carbohydrates are whole grains, peas, legumes, and starchy vegetables. It’s okay to eat refined carbohydrates every now and then. But make sure that the majority of carbohydrates consumed are complex carbohydrates.
