KONTAN.CO.ID – NEW YORK. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the latest research results Friday. In the report, the CDC reported that a passenger who tested positive for Covid-19 infected 15 other passengers on a flight from London to Hanoi, Vietnam.

Reporting from NBC (21/9/2020), as many as 12 passengers in business class and 2 passengers in economy class, as well as a flight crew were infected on March 1, 2020. In the study, researchers identified a 27-year-old woman from Vietnam who had a sore throat. and coughing before flying.

Upon arrival, his symptoms progressed further, and he tested positive four days later. As of March 10, contact tracing was carried out for 217 passengers aboard Vietnam Airlines flights.

Researchers said that prior to the flight, the woman had traveled to all 15 provinces in Vietnam. However, there is no solid evidence to support the potential transmission of Covid-19 to others outside the plane.

Risk of infection with Covid-19 exposure

Quoting Daily Star (21/9/2020), it was stated that the transmission of the virus arose because of the proximity of the seats where this action increased the risk of infection with Covid-19 exposure. Meanwhile, this seating position is more likely to occur in economy class.

The researchers concluded that the current social distancing practice of emptying middle seats in flights did not appear to be sufficient to prevent transmission.

From the study’s exposure, the risk of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 on board during long flights is real and has the potential to cause the emergence of the Covid-19 cluster.

The report recommends that infection screening and prevention measures should be tightened, especially for those traveling from countries with high cases of the coronavirus.

“Our findings call for enhanced screening and infection prevention measures by public health authorities, regulators and the aviation industry,” he said.

The study states, every airport and aircraft must require the use of masks for passengers and flight crew.
