Xi warns of the danger of a clash of civilizations

The Chinese president stressed the need for the world to oppose the politicization and stigmatization of Covid-19, and called on world leaders to adopt “the concept of the family (..) and to avoid falling into the trap of civilization.”

There are differences between the US and China on many issues, including the origin of the pandemic, trade and technological dominance, and maritime borders. The United States has criticized China for its ambitions in the South China Sea and its efforts to suppress democratic movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

However, Xi argued that China has no tendency to create hegemony, expansion or spheres of influence. “China has no intention of engaging in a Cold War with any country,” Xi said, saying China is a bulwark for international systems and a responsive partner in diplomatic disputes. “We insist on dialogue to overcome differences and negotiations to resolve disputes,” Xi said.
