The number of general practitioners has increased by 5% in the last two years. At the same time, the number of GP cases has decreased slightly. Furthermore, more and more doctors are women and the percentage of over 40s is also increasing.
GPs are increasingly working as employees or permanent substitutes instead of running their own practice. This is evident from the data of the research institute Nivel. They also more often work in a pair or group practice with more and more doctors per practice.
The total number of GPs rose from 11,218 in 2020 to 11,754 in 2022. According to Nivel, the number of GPs per 10,000 population also increased slightly, from 6.4 in 2020 to 6.7 last year.
This increase was almost entirely due to additional GPs working as observers at a practice. The number of practices has decreased slightly in the last two years, from 4,885 to 4,874.
Nearly 61 percent of primary care physicians are now women. In 2020 it was still 58%. The share of GPs under the age of forty drops slightly to 27.7 per cent.
