The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is again connected to the Ukrainian grid

Technicians restored the 750-kilovolt main line on Friday afternoon. Three other reserve lines, damaged in the fighting, remain out of service, the IAEA said.

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant stopped supplying electricity to households and businesses on 5 September, and the last of a total of six functioning reactors were shut down by employees on 11 September. After being disconnected from the power grid, the plant first ensured cooling and operation thanks to the electricity produced directly at the nuclear power plant, then it was dependent on a backup line that connected it to the grid via the substation of a nearby thermoelectric power station.

War in Ukraine

Although the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has improved over the past week, the facility is still in the middle of a war zone, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said. Offsite grid safety and backup power systems are essential to ensure nuclear safety and prevent a nuclear accident, even when the reactors are not in operation, he added.

There are Russian soldiers and military equipment at the power plant, where Ukrainian employees are still working. The power plant was damaged several times during the bombing, raising fears of a possible nuclear accident. Earlier this month, an IAEA mission visited the power plant to assess the damage and the situation on site. Russia also announced that two agency representatives would remain permanently at the plant.
