The Inhumanity of Russia’s Judicial System: From Navalny’s Imprisonment to Lawyer Arrests

Everyone who watches the news today knows that Russia is killing Ukrainian women and children. Less well known are the tortures it subjects its own citizens to.

The world public knows the name Alexei Navalny. He keeps getting new prison sentences, even for the time he was no longer free. The conditions of his imprisonment are increasingly harsh.

But the regime of Orbán’s friend was not satisfied with that. Navalny’s only connection to the outside world was his lawyers. They aren’t anymore. The instruction was: Navalny’s defense attorney to be arrested and tried. The instruction was fulfilled in the past days. Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Lipcer and Igor Sergunin are in custody. They are accused of participating in an extremist association. This was to consist of the “supreme extremist” Navalny writing the letters and the lawyers publishing them.

Through the eyes of Sasha Mitrofanova: Friend Viktor, but whose?

Over 200 Russian defense attorneys have signed a petition in connection with this regime action, calling on their professional colleagues to take warning action and to cancel participation in any proceedings of the Russian judicial system. However, the Federal Bar Association rejected the petition, saying it smacked of politics and was “demagogic noise”.

The Russian judicial system is a mechanism in which it is possible to find much in common with the days when the courts were run by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In Russia itself, however, it is pointed out that even under Stalin it was not usual for the state to imprison lawyers for doing their job. And to the fact that the inhuman behavior of the members of this machinery is now more than under the communists.

A recent example occurred during one of the makeovers with the painter Alexandra Skočilenková. She is accused of spreading hatred against the Russian army because she stuck anti-war labels on the price lists of goods in a supermarket. Skočilenková was officially diagnosed with several serious illnesses, including an ovarian cyst, celiac disease and a heart defect. She arrived at the court hearing on October 11 with a pacemaker, which was necessary because her heart had stopped briefly earlier.

Previously, the prison administration had deliberately prevented her from receiving gluten-free food. The court proceedings were planned so that Skočilenková would starve for more than 24 hours. In order for her to eat at all, her lawyers had to announce in a coordinated manner that they were on sick leave, then the court proceedings were cancelled.

Towards the end of the session, Skočilenková asked for a break, which was necessary to take her to the facility and change the batteries in the pacemaker. However, the prosecutor Gladyšev refused the request and the judge Děmjaševová agreed with it, while letting it be known that Skočilenkova let the flashlights discharge on purpose. In addition, the judge did not allow Skočilenko to eat, drink and visit the toilet.

Who in the democratic world shakes hands with Putin as if shaking hands with this robed sadist and similar creatures.
