The Witcher Season 3: Henry Cavill’s Departure and the Decline of the Series

The end of Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt of Rivia is probably the strongest signal that Andrzej Sapkowski’s series world is not in the best condition. At the same time, the representative of the witcher is one of the big fans of the fantasy saga, which reads seven books and several side stories.

The actor’s official reason for leaving the project is a busy schedule, but he has previously let it be known that he would not like to leave the complex characters from the Slavic world of monsters and magic too drab or black and white. The creators did not suit him, as is evident from the third, and for Cavill the last, adventure on the continent.

The Witcher has another series. Ciri (Freya Allan) goes through more than one difficult test in the third series.

While the eight-part sequel keeps the main skeleton of the story connected to the novels, the soul of the narrative and the characters present a significant question mark. Long gone is the short story scheme, and The Witcher follows up on the narrative it adopted in series two. However, the latter represents only a kind of guide to events from which, despite the clearly defined genre, the magic has faded as easily as the bard’s song.

The monster is less and less, although when it does appear it serves as a nice action transition or demonstration of the skills of the more mature and capable Ciri. The main focus soon turns to mages and their role in the coming conflict. However, the amount of dialogue between them and other important characters acts as a filler in the pre-given structure of actions and reactions, and Sapkowski himself is probably leafing through the books in disbelief to find where he created something similar.

The characters are emptier, they lose their importance, and thus the necessary effect, when they play key roles in the story or, on the contrary, die “dramatically”. At that time, the witcher also enters a phase where intrigue and politicking play a major role. There, however, one cannot avoid the relentless comparison with fantasy siblings such as Game of Thrones, where pulling the strings of fate prepared nerve-wracking revelations and twists at every moment.

Paradoxically, the most successful part of the third season is just such an episode called The Art of Deception (also the last episode in the opening five, which Netflix released at the end of June). It’s about forty-eight minutes of talk and very little action. However, the creators managed to come up with an interesting point of view on the event, which is an imaginary calm before the storm. It also works as a promise that the second half and subsequent series finale will be able to convince The Witcher fans to flip the coin for a fourth time.

The Witcher has another series. Henry Cavill makes his final appearance as the witcher Geralt of Rivia.

The final three episodes really pick up a solid pace and some moments stand out above the overall quality of the series. But the necessary momentum is again slowed down by the part devoted almost entirely to Ciri, and finally the farewell to the original Geralt, which the British actor probably deserved to be more spectacular.

As a result, the finale does not hold the same promise as the successful part with number five, and a clever deception no longer remains a deception. It’s clear that The Witcher will continue to attract attention. But it won’t be a hit anymore. If the production survives a fourth series starring Liam Hemsworth, it might even make it to Swallow Tower or even The Lady of the Lake. But the television world and viewership numbers are relentless, and even The Witcher will probably be short on such monsters.
