In the course of the ongoing Russian air defense on the territory of Ukraine, the Russian Air Force uses a wide variety of anti-aircraft weapons (APW) and special munitions. Retired military pilot Ilya Tumanov decided to tell about one of them, which is in the arsenal of Su-34 fighter-bombers.
This time we are talking about the AgitAB-500-300 or the “Political Officer’s Bomb”, which not everyone has permission to use.
AgitAB stands for Propaganda Aerial Bomb. The caliber, as you understand, is under half a ton, actually 300 kg. It is necessary, as you guessed from its name, to conduct a merciless information war against enemies, Tumanov explained.
The expert, in his usual joking manner, explained that AgitAB-500-300 is an “iron barrel with plumage” – a container in which it is “carefully wrapped in a rag” (packed in a parcel so as not to be damaged).
The special pyro charge opens its body, after which the waste paper is carried by air currents to a predetermined area. The area of the sheets is calculated according to special formulas, which probably no one knows anymore. Because when they practice dropping this bomb on the test site, nobody wants to trash hundreds of kg of paper, so they rattle the fuse in such a way that the AgitAB opens and begins to shuffle with all its might, ejecting its contents after hitting the ground , he added.
The expert recalled that he once heard about a curious but interesting case of using such special ammunition. It was during the war in Afghanistan, where for some reason the AgitAB, dropped by a bomber, did not work properly and did not open at a given height, then accidentally killed some influential Mujahideen while falling, taking a direct hit.
