The watch that was captured in the deadly shooting of Bas van Wijk was a fake Rolex | NOW

The watch that was captured just before the shooting of 24-year-old Bas van Wijk in Amsterdam is a fake Rolex. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will inform NU.nl about this on Sunday after reporting het Parool. Van Wijk may have been shot because he seemed to want to intervene when someone wanted to steal the watch of one of his friends.

The Public Prosecution Service does not yet know whether the suspects in the case knew that the watch is not a real Rolex. In addition, it has yet to be confirmed whether the watch was the reason for the shooting. Whether or not the watch was counterfeit will make no legal difference in the case.

Van Wijk was shot dead on 8 August near the water in De Oeverlanden park in Amsterdam. Prior to the incident would disagreement between the friends of Van Wijk and the group around the shooter arose.

Van Wijk’s friends thought that the other group was looking at them and out for the watch. According to eyewitnesses, the watch was stolen, after which Van Wijk allegedly got into an argument with the perpetrators. He would have been shot on this.

The suspect confessed to having fired

Partly thanks to statements by witnesses, five suspects could be arrested that same month. One of the arrested, a twenty-year-old Amsterdammer, has confessed to having shot.

This Amsterdammer is still in custody. He is primarily suspected of murder, or qualified manslaughter or manslaughter. Qualified manslaughter means that someone has been killed in order to cover up another criminal offense, such as theft in this case. He is also suspected of extortion.

One of the other detainees turned out to have nothing to do with the case, but was detained for another criminal offense. He would have violated the gun law. Three other detainees have since been released due to lack of evidence.
