The very first evidence of transplacental transmission of Sras-CoV-2 comes from France

Published last Tuesday, the article entitled: “Transplacentary transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection” provides the first evidence of transplacental transmission (from a pregnant woman to her baby) of Sars-CoV-2, the coronavirus with l origin of COVID-19.

The answer to this phenomenon, which moves the scientific community quite a bit, is brought to us by doctors from the Antoine Béclère hospital in Paris.

In fact, the cesarean delivery of a woman carrying the virus enlightened scientists on the subject. They excluded the fact that the baby would have contracted the virus after birth, and were able to demonstrate the existence of “inflammation caused by the coronavirus” on the brain of the newborn. This proves, according to these doctors, that the means of transmission of the famous virus was only possible via the placenta.

A possibility already suggested by previous studies

Several universities have already looked into research on this subject. Studies were published last March, including one in Italy and three others in France. And so to speak, despite the doubts and the existence of similar cases detected before, no evidence has been established so far.

These French doctors claim that concrete evidence has just been discovered with the case of this thirty-five week pregnant woman.

According to the latter: “We have shown that transplacental transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection is possible during the last weeks of pregnancy. Other cases of potential perinatal transmission have recently been described, but present several unsolved problems ”.

Pregnant women have nothing to fear

Despite this discovery, doctors remain optimistic and affirm that the possibility of transmission of the coronavirus from a pregnant woman to her child is “very rare”.

According to Daniele De Luca, lead author of the article: “Pregnancy is very controlled, and if you have something like that, it can be controlled. In most cases, there will be no harm to the baby. ”

However, he points out that: “There are many things we can do, but we cannot close our eyes and say that it will never happen.” Indeed, even with the results of several studies, several questions remain unanswered around this mother-to-fetus transmission of Sars-CoV-2.
