The United States supported the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO

Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs

Talks about the possibility of these two countries joining NATO have intensified in recent weeks amid disputes between Russia and the West over the concentration of Russian forces near the border with Ukraine.

The United States has always said it would be happy to consider Finland and Sweden’s applications for NATO membership, if any, US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday, January 11 during a briefing in Department of State.

“We are always ready to support Finland and Sweden if they want to talk about NATO membership. We are ready to do this,” Nuland said.

She added that Sweden and Finland need to be judged by NATO standards. At the same time, Nuland clarified that these countries are stable and an established democracy has been formed in them.

“Therefore, this conversation with them will be somewhat different than with other countries that are just transitioning to democratic systems and have problems with corruption, economic reforms, democratic stability, etc.,” the State Department spokesman clarified.

We will remind, the Republican congressmen are preparing a bill, which will be proposed declare Ukraine a NATO-plus country.
