The Unique Strawberry Supermoon Appears Tomorrow, The Last in 2021!

Jakarta

Phenomenon strawberry supermoon or the strawberry full moon will appear on Thursday, June 24, 2021. Unfortunately, this supermoon will be the last in 2021.

According to NASA, during 2021 there will be four supermoons. The first supermoon appeared in March, the second in April, the third in May and the last, namely the strawberry supermoon which falls on June 24, 2021.

“During a full moon, the sun, earth, and moon line up along a 180-degree line. But because the moon’s orbit is slightly different from Earth’s (5 degrees from Earth’s orbital plane), it’s usually slightly higher or slightly lower than Earth’s shadow, which allows sunlight to fully illuminate the side of the moon that faces Earth,” NASA science communicator Andrea Jones told Live Science in an online interview.

Launching from USA Today and Live Science, Wednesday (23/6/2021), the strawberry supermoon will decorate the sky from Wednesday after sunset to Thursday around the world. Even though it’s called a supermoon, it’s actually not the biggest full moon in 2021.

Throughout 2021, the super blood moon that fell last May was the largest. This full moon is also accompanied by a lunar eclipse.

The term ‘supermoon’ itself was coined by an astrologer in 1979 with the definition of the position of the moon which is closer than the earth than usual. Supermoons can be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.

On average, the moon is 240,000 miles (386,000 kilometers) from Earth. However, during its current monthly orbit, the moon will be closest to Earth (at perigee) starting this Wednesday, at about 223,600 miles (359,800 km).

Although it is called Strawberry Supermoon, people who watch will not find a red color like strawberries in general. Strawberry Supermoon will appear yellow or orange.

Then Why Called Strawberry Supermoon?

According to the Almanac, the term Strawberry Supermoon came about because during these months, communities in the northeastern United States and parts of eastern Canada harvest ripe strawberries. One of them is the Algonquin tribe.

Meanwhile, Europeans also call this phenomenon the month of the Rose, because the flower blooms in June. The strawberry full moon is also called the “hot moon” because it often appears right around the start of summer.

This June full moon will peak on Thursday at around 2:40 pm EDT. However, the public can watch in all regions in Indonesia starting Wednesday, June 24, 2021 around sunset until the next day.

This strawberry full moon will be the last supermoon of 2021. There are a total of 4 supermoons that adorn the sky this year.

“Actually there is a difference in understanding of when the full moon is close enough to Earth to qualify as a supermoon. This difference occurs because of the use of slightly different thresholds,” NASA said.

“Because the moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle, the moon is sometimes closer to Earth than at other times during its orbit.” NASA continued.
