Discover the disciplines of a natural history museum, even when you are a visually impaired child. This is the aim of the book, Little tactile explorers at the Museum, which allows you to grasp through the senses unusual and sometimes unrecognized objects from the collections of the Museum of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). This is the first interactive book for 6-12 year olds on natural sciences, to touch, listen, manipulate.
“The book was created with and for children, in particular with visually impaired children from the Institute for Young Blind in Toulouse, who worked from objects chosen in the museum,” explains Charles-Henri Morille, head of Mediation service at the Toulouse Natural History Museum. The idea through this docu-fiction is to discover iconic collectibles from six natural science disciplines: mineralogy, paleontology, prehistory, botany, zoology, ethnology. “
Written in collaboration with Anne-Sophie Baumann, author of children’s literature and published by the publishing house The fingers that dream, the book contains objects represented by a relief illustration, with which it is possible to interact. By touching it, children can imagine its texture, temperature and hardness. Hearing is also used thanks to sound devices via QR Codes.
The texts are also overprinted in Braille. “And to make children aware of scientific culture and the natural sciences, the tact-illustrated book has already been presented in leisure centers and libraries, with a transportable kit representing the objects in the book”, specifies Charles-Henri Morille. About twenty copies of the book have been published. It is also available for purchase at a price of 110 euros.
