The three main types of hybrid cars – what are they? – Car news – Car

Another feature of plug-in hybrids is low average fuel consumption combined with high performance. The Volvo XC40, which is powered by a hybrid engine developing 262 horsepower, consumes an average of 2 to 2.4 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers. The Peugeot 3008 all-wheel drive hybrid system has a total output of 300 horsepower and an average fuel consumption of 1.3 – 1.4 l / 100 km.

Thanks to more spacious batteries and powerful electric motors, these cars have several driving modes. The first, discussed above, is the electric mode, and it will be an ideal choice for everyday city driving. This does not mean that electric driving on the highway is also excluded, as, for example, Peugeot hybrids with electricity alone can reach 135 km / h. When the battery is low or the car is required to run more dynamically, hybrid mode is automatically activated. At this point, the car uses both engines installed to optimize energy consumption.

The most popular mode for dynamic driving enthusiasts will be the sporty driving mode. In this mode, the wheels are driven by both engines, and their main task is to develop maximum power over the entire speed range. Because the electric motor can deliver 100 percent power to the wheels at any time, the accelerator pedal is particularly sensitive and responsive to the slightest foot movement. Plug-in hybrid cars are also significantly more dynamic than analog cars with only an internal combustion engine. No wonder some of the world’s most dynamic cars, such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, Koenigsegg Gemera and others are plug-in hybrids.

The origins can be traced back to the last century

The first traditional hybrid cars appeared on the streets at the end of the last century, when Toyota launched its Prius. In these cars, the internal combustion engine works in interaction with an electric motor powered by a small battery. The main role of the electric motor here is to provide support to the internal combustion engine in situations where it has to do the most work, but the fuel consumption and, consequently, the costs – the highest. This is starting a run or maneuvering in the city at low speed.

In these hybrid cars, the battery charges itself through the brake energy recovery system and engine power while driving. Because the petrol and electric motor switch seamlessly, its use is no different from a traditional car.

Another and probably the least visible type of hybrid engine is the so-called light hybrids used by Audi, Suzuki, Volkswagen and many other manufacturers. Cars with this hybrid system use fuel for acceleration, while the electric motor has only a few functions – it helps to start the engine, it can be switched off during braking and deceleration, as well as in congestion and occasionally at steady speeds. This hybrid system powers the car’s components such as climate control and a multimedia system, relieving the internal combustion engine.

These are the three main types of hybrid cars, but there is no doubt that the first one – the plug-in hybrid car – will be the most popular in the foreseeable future, as it is able to combine ecology with practicality, which is invaluable for long-distance travel.
