The third wave of Covid-19 in South Korea will probably be the biggest

KOMPAS.comSouth Korea is grappling with a spike in coronavirus cases over the past few days.

Seeing these conditions, a senior official warned of the potential for the biggest wave of infections if not addressed.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (CDCK) reported 386 new cases on Friday (20/11/2020).

With that added, the total cases in South Korea so far stood at 30,403 with 503 deaths.

The new cases registered on Friday were the fourth day in a row to exceed 300 infections, the highest since August 2020.

“We are at a tipping point; if it fails to block the current spread, we could face a major national infection that goes beyond the first two waves,” said senior official Lim Sook-young. Reuters, Saturday (11/21/2020).

The country of Ginseng was hit by a spike in cases at the end of February to early March and August 2020.

According to Lim, the standard for imposing stricter social distancing measures is expected to be reached soon.

Next week, the infection cases in South Korea are predicted to exceed 400 cases and more than 600 cases by early December 2020.

The infection has recently spread among colleges and schools after educational activities have opened.

Lim specifically urged young people to refrain from holding meetings.

On Thursday (19/11/2020), South Korea tightened prevention guidelines ahead of the annual college entrance exam on December 3, 2020.

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun has called for all social gatherings to be canceled, but bars, nightclubs, religious services and sporting events are still allowed to operate with a limit on attendance.

South Korea is currently negotiating to secure a vaccine Covid-19 for 30 million people or 60 percent of the population.

That number includes 10 million doses obtained from global vaccine facilities, known as COVAX.

The Seoul metropolitan area recorded 262 new cases on Friday, up from 218 cases on Thursday.

Health officials previously said the capital could be subject to tighter restrictions if the daily average infection rate for the week rose to 200 or more.
