As Reuters explains, New Delhi seeks to diversify its purchases. Its state refineries plan to buy 36% less oil than normal from Saudi Arabia in May. That is why the country is trying to exchange Saudi supplies with new origins like Guyana. The trend to buy less oil from Saudi Arabia is part of a larger tactic. For example, at the end of 2020 India cut imports from the Middle East, Africa and the United States, increasing its consumption of oil from Latin America and the Caspian Sea. In April 2021 the private Indian refinery HPCL-Mittal Energy bought the first shipment in Guyana – Today is the start of interstate contacts, Reuters stresses – Guyana has become the world’s newest energy hotspot after a consortium led by Exxon Mobil started producing light crude in the Stabroek offshore block at the end of 2019.
